If you're anything like me, there have been moments when you look into the mirror and think WTF. lol... Like WTF did I do to be put in this particular situation at this very moment? If you're one of the "normal ones" who have never experienced this, you're lying and I don't trust you. lol
I have these moments more than I'd like to admit, partially because I'm an achiever (if you haven't taken the enneagram test, do so immediately HERE) who leans towards actions and achievements in a hurry. Sometimes so quickly that I lose touch with myself and what I really want. So when I look around and realize I have taken a wrong turn, it's usually pretty far down the road. Though this inner dialogue is necessary, it's usually followed by a panic attack or extreme anxiety about the should have, would have, could have's and how far I have to backtrack to redirect myself to the correct path... and if you know me, you know my GREATEST pet peeve is backtracking.
Recently, I have been working towards a certification program for public speaking, coaching, and facilitations. During one of my classes, the instructor did a lesson on the the most basic process of our mind and the notion of conscious thinking. You see, our mind is divided into the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Your conscious mind, which represents what you think and your level of awareness on certain information that you're presented with, is completely decided upon by you and your surroundings. Your subconscious mind on the other hand, is your feelings, it represents emotions, memories, values, belief systems, and spiritual intelligence that you've developed over your life.
When people talk about being stuck in a rut and being unhappy with the results they are producing in their current life, it is a direct representation of their chosen thoughts. You see, what you choose to think and surround yourself with will determine how you feel. How you feel will be absorbed by your body and therefore your reflective in your actions. If your thoughts continue to be shaped by your current results, you will create the same feelings, the same actions, and be faced with the same results time and time again until you decide to consciously break this cycle of negativity.
When I was presented with this information, a lightbulb exploded in my head and I was dizzy with the reality that my check-ins with myself were reactive of my current situations and not proactive in creating the type of results I actually wanted. It is too little too late to judge my wrong turns and punish myself for them, instead I need to consciously choose information I'm absorbing, people I'm surrounding myself with, and alter my perspective to one that is conducive to the type of person I want to show up as. In turn, my feelings will be those of empowerment vs. complacency and my actions will reflect that. Results, in whatever area you're striving for, are dependent on no one else but YOU! You and I both are responsible for closing the gap between who we really want to be and who we show up as every day.
Once I understood this notion, I saw how I was consciously choosing self-sabotage by my circle of negative influences and limited thinking. Personal development has been at the forefront of my goals this year, and although only 17% of what you consume in your conscious mind will manifest in your subconscious mind, I have found that my current results are profoundly different from those of my past. It makes me want to consume more positive content, foster uplifting relationships, and strive to show gratitude for the opportunity I have been given to learn and grow as a person. Whether you're struggling with health, career advancement, relationships, or simply in the midst of that WTF feeling that life throws at you from time to time, take a minute to evaluate where your mindset is and what you THINK you need to do to get the results you desire.
